Born in the back of a taxicab on Christmas Day, 1934, he was the first-born son and one of seven children of John Bernard (Red) and Hazel (Mackenzie) Daley. He was a graduate of Liberty Center High School, class of 1954.

He was born December 8, 1933 in Tontogany, OH, to Howard and Alberta (Ferguson) Downard. He married Viola Komon on January 29, 1955 in Assumption, OH. Richard and Viola raised 9 children and celebrated over 62 years of marriage, before Viola’s passing in 2017.
