BG Schools Foundation marks anniversary with 25 Acts of Service

Stacey Higgins and Joe Edens explain the Bowling Green Schools Foundation 25 Acts of Service project at a recent BGCS board of education meeting.

The Bowling Green Schools Foundation is asking students to perform 25 acts of service to celebrate its 25th anniversary.

Service is a core part of what we believe as a group, said foundation President Joe Edens at a recent Bowling Green City Schools board of education meeting.

To mark its anniversary, the foundation is urging students, grades K-12, to perform 25 acts of service in the community before April 30, said Stacey Higgins, Crim Elementary teacher and foundation board member.

We are doing a lot of things to help students meet that goal, she said.

A service opportunities calendar is posted on the foundation’s website – updated every two months — and the pamphlet students need to complete can be found on the FlyerBoard on the school district’s website.

Acts of service are defined as actions done without payment or something in return and can be performed as part of a school event, such as playground cleanup; as part of an organization such as Scouts or youth groups; or individually, such as raking or shoveling for a neighbor.

More opportunities will be shared as the year progresses, Higgins said.

“We are encouraging all of our students to be able to give back (due to) the fact that the foundation and its supporters have been providing materials and opportunities for them,” she said.

The foundation helps fund field trips and teachers’ projects, she said.

At the end of April, all students who turn in completed form will get a T-shirt and their name will be entered into a raffle drawing to receive a video game system (either a P25 or Nintendo Switch) or an iPad.

“We believe our community is stronger when our schools are stronger,” Edens said. “We strive to know the needs within our schools and work to connect those with (people) who can help meet that need.”

He said that the foundation has distributed in excess of $500,000 in teacher grants and student support over the last 25 years.
