PORT CLINTON — Perrysburg senior Eeman Hashem won a sectional title in Division I singles, and she was joined as sectional champions by the Perrysburg doubles team of juniors Penelope Giammarco and Madison Watkins.
Finishing second at sectional singles was Perrysburg senior Erin Ross and the Yellow Jackets’ doubles team of senior Autumn Wittenmyer and junior Campbell Looser was also a sectional runner-up.
Bowling Green junior Julia Barnett finished third at sectional singles, and all three singles players and both doubles teams from the Fremont and Findlay sectionals advanced to the district tournament at Port Clinton High School this week with aspirations of qualifying for the state tournament.
The district tournament began Tuesday and will conclude this Saturday with the semifinals and finals. Two singles and two doubles team winners to the State Tournament at the College of Wooster on October 17-18.
To get to the sectional championship at Findlay, Hashem defeated Findlay junior Abi Russell 6-3, 7-6(3), Lima Senior junior Ali Weber 6-0, 6-0, Findlay senior Caitlin England 6-2, 7-6(5), and then her teammate, Ross, 6-1, 3-1 (ret.) in the championship.
Ross defeated Findlay junior Kendall Beall 6-3, 6-2, Wapakoneta sophomore Hannah Palmer 6-0, 6-2 and Wapakoneta sophomore Liberty Jolly, 6-4, 2-6, 7-6(3) to reach the final.
Giammarco and Watkins advanced with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Findlay sophomore Audrey Schroeder and junior Lauren Taber, then won again 6-0, 6-0 in the semifinals against Wapakoneta juniors Anja Walters and Mylie Moser. In the final, the Perrysburg duo defeated Wittenmyer and Looser, 6-1, 6-0.
Wittenmyer and Looser advanced by defeating Findlay sophomore Willow Wetzel and junior Reese Hagedorn, 6-0, 6-0, and Wapakoneta juniors Kate Eley and Brooklyn Mowery 6-2, 6-0 before facing off with their teammates in the final.
In the Fremont sectional, Barnett opened with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Anthony Wayne senior Kai Ying Buskirk, then Barnett defeated Sylvania Northview senior Claire LaPointe, 6-0, 6-3, and in the semifinals Barnett lost to AW freshman Jullian To, 6-1, 6-3.
In the consolation final, Barnett, the Northern Lakes League Cardinal Division Player of the Year, defeated AW senior Harper Clifton, 6-3, 6-1, to finish third.
