Toledo man pleads guilty of rape of BGSU student

A Toledo man has pleaded guilty to the rape of a Bowling Green State University student while on campus.

Assad Girad, 25, appeared Monday in the courtroom of Wood County Common Pleas Judge Molly Mack.

Wood County Chief Assistant Prosecutor Pamela Gross said Girad had agreed to plead guilty to rape as indicted and the amended charge of abduction.

“He will be changing his plea of not guilty to guilty as outlined by the state,” agreed defense attorney Elizabeth Jones.

Mack said the longest minimum term for the rape charge was 11 years with the longest maximum 16.5 years as the offense falls within Reagan Tokes Act qualifications.

The maximum prison sentence for abduction is 36 months; however, as the offense is a third-degree felony, prison is not presumed, she said.

If imposed consecutively, the prison sentence could be 19.5 years, she said.

No judicial release will be allowed, Mack said.

Girad was indicted in May 2023 for rape and kidnapping, both first-degree felonies, and tampering with evidence, a third-degree felony.

On April 1, 2023, the victim invited Girad to watch a movie with friends. She clearly told Girad prior to his arrival she did not want to have sex with him, according to court documents.

Once the movie ended and they were alone, they kissed briefly and then Girad lifted her shirt. She told him no, and he raped her while she pleaded with him to stop. He then put her on the floor, covered her mouth and nose with his hand and continued his assault, according to the documents.

The incident reportedly happened in the Kriescher-Darrow lounge on the BGSU campus.

The prosecution and defense agreed the facts would result in a finding of guilt.

Upon his release from prison, Girad must register as a Tier III sex offender, which will require him to register every 90 days for life.

The charge of tampering will be dismissed at sentencing, which was scheduled for Dec. 2.
