Lake makes swap to improve student safety

MILLBURY – Lake Schools improved the safety of their youngest students by changing student pick up and drop off.

At the September school board meeting, Superintendent Marjoe Cooper announced that safety concerns were raised at the start of the school year for elementary students being dropped off at the new school.

Buses were dropping students off on the north side of the school with parent drop off on the south side after entering from Lemoyne Road.

This required students to walk around cars to get into the building, Cooper said.

After the first week, administrators flipped the zones.

“Those are things you have to play with to see what’s the best way to work,” Cooper said. “Safety is our number one thing.’

Now, the parent drop off zone is on the north side of the building, where students get out on the passenger side of the vehicle and walk straight into the school, he said.

Parent Kristy Postlewaite, Walbridge, said she liked the change, which was much safer.

Cooper said with the buses out front, it’s easier to board.

“Just like anything, you have a plan, you want to analyze it and see how it works. If it doesn’t, you make an adjustment,” he said.

Also at the meeting, the board:

Heard members Nick Baer and Margene Akenberger praised the school-wide pep rally held during the first week of school, at which Cooper was a cheerleader.

“The energy in this school district is unlike anything it’s been for a long time,” said board member Darrel Wagner.
