The Wood County Committee on Aging has recieved a $7,500 grant for the National Council on Aging/National Institute of Senior Centers Digital Literacy Project.

The grant has been awarded to the Friends of the Wood County Committee on Aging to support digital literacy education throughout Wood County. This will complement the Healthy Aging grant funds which were used to purchase four laptop computers and to reactivate existing “hot spots” and tablets. Older adults can borrow the tablets for six-month increments.

“The program is hoping to target older adults. Last week, I submitted our application,” said Executive Director Denise Niese at the August board meeting. “Jim and I have finalized signing off on everything, so we should see $7,500 come in. I am very pleased with the outcome.”

Components of the project include:

• Host at least four in-person workshops with older adults to introduce them to the online digital literacy curriculum

• Provide one-on-one support to older adults using the self-paced online learning modules through designated office hours (minimum of one hour per week)

• Serve at least 100 unique older adults during the period of Sept. 3 to April 30, 2025

• Report progress to National Council on Aging on a quarterly basis

The North Baltimore Area Senior Center is currently in the process of relocating from Westhaven Apartments to St. Luke’s Lutheran Church.

“We continue our efforts to move our senior center space into the St. Luke’s Lutheran Church. As of yesterday, we have now moved all our materials and equipment out of the Westhaven address,” Niese said. “St. Luke’s already received the commercial refrigerator and steam table. Our plumber is designing the compartment for the new three-compartment sink.”

The next governing board meeting will take place at the Perrysburg Area Senior Center on Sept. 11 at 1:15 p.m.
