MILLBURY — Greyson Reed’s stunning last-second goal in the first half carried through as the Lake boys soccer team knocked off Evergreen 2-1 at home on Saturday in the season opener.

The win helped the Flyers exact some revenge for last year’s season-ending postseason loss to Evergreen.

“I think we played pretty well,” Lake coach Brian Reed said. “We came out quick in the first half. In the second half, we kind of died down (late).

“We still have things to work on, but all-in-all, it was nice to beat the team that ended our season last year.”

Preston Snyder, who had six goals and nine assists last year, got Lake on the board first in the game’s 13th minute.

The junior midfielder beat his defender and scored just over Evergreen’s goalkeeper, Alex Mossing, who was unable to deflect the ball enough to prevent the goal.

Evergreen’s George Allendorf scored the equalizer with 3:12 left in the half.

Greyson Reed, however, responded for Lake by taking a through pass from Snyder and using his right foot to send a shot past Mossing, who made an unsuccessful diving block attempt to his right.

The goal came with exactly one second left on the clock.

“That was awesome,” Brian Reed said. “I told them that at halftime, ‘You guys could have quit with seconds left, but you literally played until the last second.’ “

The last second goal proved to be vital as Lake was unable to convert several solid chances in the second half, including a near goal from sophomore Evan Barta in the game’s 47th minute.

Reed was happy with several of his players, including freshman Keegan Perry in the midfield, as well as Evan Barta and Delfino Garcia on the outside. He also highlighted Mason Sneed’s work on the outside.

“I thought Barta and Fino played pretty well for us,” he said. “That’s kind of a spot we’re unsure about right now.”

Mitchell Maguire went the distance in goal for Lake.

The Flyers will be back in action at home on Wednesday against Genoa at 5 p.m.
