Library introduces new bookmobile

The Wood County District Public Library will open a new chapter with its bookmobile this spring.

Kelsey Nevius, communications and marketing specialist for the library, unveiled at Wednesday’s board meeting the proposed graphics that will appear on the exterior of the bookmobile.

“I put a lot of thought into this design after many, many months talking with our leadership and staff,” she said.

The library’s leadership wanted something on brand that was very modern, she said.

“It is very eye-catching,” praised board member Mike Sibbersen.

It’s subtle but more on target with what we currently have, Nevius said.

The design on the prior bookmobile was a pile of books with Wood County District Public Library in cursive on the side.

“We had people in the past tell us they had no idea what the bookmobile was,” said library Director Michael Penrod. “So that was some of the guidance we gave Kelsey.”

The board-approved colors of bookmobile blue, Walbridge gold and Bowling Green green make up the swoosh logo on all four sides of the van.

Nevius said she went through 15 designs before she settled on this one.

Explore, Discover and Create are highly visible on the sides and back of the bookmobile.

“I like the fact that we have a professional image and logo, and it conveys more of what we do than just a place to get books,” said library Director Michael Penrod.

“People will discover, create and explore with us beyond a print book,” including crafts, adult events and tutoring, he said.

We use those words a lot, Nevius said, and they communicate to people what we provide at the library.

Board member Ellen Dalton said her first reaction was the design was very busy, but a lot of people will look at it and recognize it.

It is very distinctive, she said.

The design continues on the back, “so whoever is stuck behind us at a traffic light will have time (to read it),” Penrod said.

He said using Wood County District Public Library on the bookmobile was a lot of words, but that is its legal name.

The bookmobile was under budget at $210,000 and was purchased from TESCO Specialty Vehicles in Oregon.

In 2010, the bookmobile cost $190,000 so the increase didn’t match up with inflation, Penrod said.

The bookmobile should be delivered the second week of April.
