Former coach indicted for attempted sexual battery

A former Wood County coach has been indicted for attempting to have sex with a student and furnishing alcohol to minors.

A Wood County grand jury on Wednesday indicted Brady Nathaniel Spanfellner, 26, Cygnet for attempted sexual battery, a fourth-degree felony; three counts of failure to comply with underage alcohol laws, all unclassified misdemeanors; and eight counts contributing to the unruliness or delinquency of a child, all first-degree misdemeanors.

On March 19, 2022, he allegedly attempted to engage in sexual conduct with a 17-year-old while a coach or in disciplinary control over the alleged victim.

Spanfellner was hired in March 2021 as an assistant track coach at Elmwood High School. When he resigned in April 2022 after rumors started circulating, he was co-head coach of the track team.

He allegedly bought or sold liquor to three different minors, twice on Dec. 31, 2021, to a 16-year-old and a 17-year-old; and once on March 11, 2022, to a 16-year-old.

He is accused of encouraging a child to become unruly twice on Dec. 31, 2021; from Nov. 1-30, 2021; Dec. 1-31, 2021; from Jan. 1-31, 2022; Feb. 1-28, 2022; March 1-31, 2022; and on March 11, 2022.
