Perrysburg’s Willer already contributing to Lourdes volleyball

SYLVANIA — Despite the play of Arleena Willer, Lourdes University volleyball is winless in seven games, including two Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference games.

Willer, a 5-foot-6 defensive specialist, is from Perrysburg but attended Toledo Christian, was a two-year letter winner for the Eagles.

She was Toledo Area Athletic Conference Player of the Year as a senior and a first team All-TAAC selection in 2022 after earning second team honors as a junior. She was also first team all-district as a senior and led the Eagles to two TAAC and sectional titles.

Willer is already playing a major role in her first collegiate season under coach Greg Reitz, who has a 228-187 (.549) record in 14 seasons at the helm of the Gray Wolves.

In his 16th season overall as a women’s head coach, Reitz has a 248-222 (.528) career mark. He is the only head coach in Lourdes program’s history and was named WHAC Coach of the Year in 2015.

Playing two matches in two different venues on the same day earlier this season, Lourdes fell 25-22, 25-23, 19-25, 25-16 to Saint Xavier in the Shannon Center in Chicago, Ill. before dropping a 25-17, 25-9, 25-12 contest to Judson inside the Lindner Center in Elgin, Ill.

Willer contributed with 24 digs, including 12 in each match.

“The afternoon match was a similar story to the rest of our matches,” Reitz said. “We did not play well for long enough to win the match. This evening we just did not play well to give ourselves a chance to win.”

Lourdes began that weekend in Chicago, Ill. on Friday evening, dropping a neutral site contest to eighth-ranked Indiana Wesleyan 25-14, 25-16, 25-9 inside the Shannon Center. Willer had a team-high seven digs.

“This was a very good team and we competed well with them for parts of the match, but their consistency is unlike what we have experienced so far,” Reitz said. “We will need to emulate their efficiency going forward and our results will change.”

Lourdes went five sets for the third straight match, but the Gray Wolves were unable to open WHAC play with a victory, falling to Concordia (Mich.) 26-28, 25-21, 24-26, 25-18, 15-11 inside Cardinal Fieldhouse in Ann Arbor, Mich.

“We are playing some solid volleyball for much of the match, but we need to be able to make a few more plays in crunch time to get us over the hump,” Reitz said.

Defensively, Willer picked up 29 digs. The Gray Wolves finished the match with 99 digs on the night.
