Plant swap set for April 29 at fairgrounds

The annual Wood County Plant Exchange offers free plants, with plant donation from 8:30-9:45 a.m. and giveaway at 10 a.m. on April 29.

It will be held at the Wood County Fairgrounds, 13800 West Poe Road. Bring plants to share and take home more plants. For more information, call 419-354-9050.

The Toledo Plant Exchange, which has given away thousands of plants since 2005, will be held May 6.

Plant dropoff is from 8:30-9:45 a.m., followed by plant giveaway at 10 a.m.

It will be held at the Lucas County Rec Center, 2901 Key St., Maumee. For more information, call 419-578-6783.

There are two irresistible draws to a plant exchange: getting something for nothing, and the possibility of obtaining a variety the gardener has not heretofore grown.

Visitors are encouraged to drop off weed-free and labeled plants as well as gently-used gardening paraphernalia after 8:30 a.m. that will be organized into groups by Master Gardener volunteers (who will also answer questions). At 10 the swap/shop opens, and the event wraps up before 11.

Each adult may select a few plants simply for coming; those who bring items can take more.

The key to selecting plants that will be successful is knowing how many hours of sunlight your garden plots receive: six or more hours a day is considered full sun, three to six is part-sun, and less than three hours is shade.

Likely to be found are hostas, daylilies, ornamental grass, ground covers, chives, canna tubers, saplings, raspberries and seeds. There are always surprises, such as orchids, cactus and houseplants.
