Falcons outlasted by Eagles in high-scoring contest

The Bowling Green State University baseball team went back-and-forth all day with the Eastern Michigan Eagles on Friday at Steller Field.

Kyle Gurney started the BGSU scoring with a solo home run in the first that sparked a three-run first inning for the Orange and Brown. EMU responded with three in the second to start the back-and-forth affair. At the plate, Sam Seidel paced the Falcons from the three-spot in the order, going 2-for-2 in addition to drawing two walks. Seidel scored three of BGSU’s six runs and stole three bases as well.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Kyle Gurney tallied the first BGSU hit of the game with a solo shot to left, a line drive that cleared the fence to make it a quick 1-0 lead.

Sam Seidel followed with a walk before stealing second. Nathan Archer struck out swinging, but a dropped third strike allowed him to reach with Seidel moving to third for runners at the corners. Tyler Ross was then hit by a pitch to load the bases.

A pass ball to Gavin Ganun was enough for Seidel to score. Ganun then hit a grounder to short, but a throwing error let Ganun reach with Archer scoring to give BGSU a 3-0 lead after one.

Eastern Michigan responded with a two-run home run in the second. Another run crossed later in the inning to knot it up at 3-3.

The Falcons gave their answer in the bottom of the third. Seidel singled through the left side of the infield. He stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error on the throw down from the catcher. Nathan Rose delivered a sacrifice fly out to right field, scoring Seidel and putting BGSU back on top 4-3.

The Eagles hit a solo home run in the top of the fourth to knot it up at 4-4.

Another solo round trip knock, this one in the top of the sixth, pushed EMU in front 5-4.

Seidel began the bottom of the seventh by getting hit by a pitch. Archer sent a single up the middle to put runners at the corners, setting up an RBI single for Tyler Ross to tie the game once again, this time at 5-5.

In the top of the eighth, Eastern Michigan attempted a double steal with one out and runners at the corners. The first runner reached second, but a perfect relay from Gurney to Ryan Johnston back to Gurney nailed the runner at home to keep the game tied 5-5.

The Falcons added a tally in the bottom of the eighth. Newman walked followed by a Gurney single and Seidel walk to load the bases. Nathan Rose was able to single to third, scoring Newman to push the Falcons in front 6-5 going into the ninth.

Eastern Michigan tallied three in the top of the ninth to reclaim the lead for the 8-6 final.
