Bowling Green State University football players PK Mason Lawler, QB Matt McDonald and WR Jake Rogers earned NFF Hampshire Honor Society membership, as announced by the National Football Foundation & College Football Hall of Fame.
To earn membership a football student-athlete must maintain a cumulative 3.2 GPA or better throughout his college career. BGSU is one of seven MAC teams to place at least one student-athlete to earn the honor. BGSU is one of four MAC schools with multiple honorees.
Other qualifications for membership in the NFF Hampshire Honor Society include: Being a starter or a significant contributor in the last year of eligibility at an NCAA FBS, FCS, Division II, Division III or an NAIA college or university; achieving a 3.2 cumulative grade point average throughout the entire course of undergraduate study; and meeting all NCAA/NAIA-mandated progress toward degree requirements.
Lawler (Avon, Ohio) was a member of the 2022 Academic All-MAC team. He appeared in all 13 of BGSU’s games in 2022 as the primary placekicker. Lawler was 11-fo-16 on field goal attempts. He appeared in 42 total games for the Falcons, mostly as a kickoff specialist.
McDonald (Newport Beach, Calif.) is a three-time Academic All-MAC selection. A 2022 Campbell Trophy semifinalist, McDonald leaves BGSU No. 7 in all-time passing percentage (.580), No. 8 in all-time career completions (521) and No. 9 all-time in all-time career passing yards (5,921). He completed 60.6 percent of his passes in 2021 and 2022 despite the defense forcing pressure on 33.6 percent of his dropbacks.
Rogers (Medina, Ohio) earned Academic All-MAC honors in 2020 and 2022. He averaged 12.3 yards per punt returns in 2022 and appeared in 28 career games for the Falcons over his four years. For his career, he averaged 7.1 yards per punt return.
BGSU has had a Falcon earn the honor three years in a row. Presley Motes earned the honor in 2021 while James Carolan, Jordan Murphy, Matt Naranjo and Nate Needham took honors last year.
Fellow MAC members Buffalo, Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, NIU, Toledo and Western Michigan also boast student-athletes that gained membership in 2023.
