Steel drum concert Saturday at BGSU

Bowling Green State University’s Student Percussion Association
will be hosting a steel drum concert on Saturday at 4 p.m. It will be Kelly Hall in the College of Musical
Arts.The concert will consist of a preformances by three bands — the Toledo School for the Arts steel drum
band, Glass City Steel; the BGSU Steel Pan Ensemble; and Pantasia from Findlay High School. they will
perform individually as well as all three bands performing together in a finale of “mass band”
selections.Liam Teaguen, head of steelpan studies and associate professor of Music at Northern Illinois
University, will also perform solos as well as with the BG Steel Pan ensemble, Pantasia and the Glass City
Steel.The concert will feature two songs written by Teaguen (Pearls and Hands Like Lightning) as well as
many other Soca (soul calypso) standards by composers like Boogsie Sharpe, Ray Holman, and Ras
Shorty.Originally led by Bryan Stainbridge, the BGSU Steel Pan Ensemble has been around since 2009. Rob
Desmond took over in 2011-2012 and is also the director of the Toledo School for the Arts steel drum
band,Glass City Steel. He is a performer, composer, and arranger of steel pan music and has performed with
ensembles across the world.
