Piece for piano, percussion world premiere on campusThe contemporary piano-percussion ensemble
Hammer/Klavier will be present the world premiere of Paul Lansky’s "Textures" Thursday at 8
p.m. in Bryan Recital Hall in Bowling Green State University Moore Center for the Musical Arts.BGSU
piano faculty member Thomas Rosenkranz is a founding member of the ensemble. The ensemble also includes
pianist Michael Sheppard and percussionists Svet Stoyanov and Gwen Burgett.The composer will be on hand
to discuss the 30-minute piece. The piece was commissioned by Hammer/Klavier.Lansky’s recent
instrumental music takes a fresh approach toward tonality and harmony that references a variety of
musical traditions."Textures" includes the movements: I. Striations; II. Loose Ends; III. Soft
Substrates; IV. Slither; V. Granite; VI. Points of Light; VII. A flutter, On Edge; and VIII.
Round-Wound.The concert is free.Film documents events marking Battle of Lake ErieTOLEDO – The
documentary "The Battle of Lake Erie Bicentennial" will air Thursday at 8 p.m. on WGTE PBS
Toledo as part of the station’s "Toledo Stories" series.From Aug. 29 through Sept. 10
communities in the Lake Erie Shores and Islands region celebrated the bicentennial of the battle, which
was a turning point in the war and secured the Great Lakes for the United States. Festivals, live
entertainment, tall ship tours and sightseeing sails, and living history reenactments brought thousands
of visitors. The highlight of the celebration was a reenactment of the battle itself, which took place
in the waters of Lake Erie, northwest of South Bass Island.The battle reenactment included sixteen tall
ships representing the original ships involved in the battle, including a replica of Commodore Oliver
Hazard Perry’s flagship Niagara.The documentary of the commemoration was produced by Nick James
productions.Impact of WWII on Japan focus of BGSU movie series"World War II and the Director"
will be the theme of the 2013 Japan Foundation Film Festival. The series, sponsored by the Asian Studies
Club, at Bowling Green State University will present three films by legendary Japanese filmmaker Keisuke
Kinoshita.All the films will screen at 7:30 p.m. in the Gish Film Theater in Hanna Hall and are free and
open to the public.The series begins Wednesday with the 1944 film "The Army." The movie subtle
critique of Japanese militarism starring Kinuyo Tanaka as the mother of a sick young man called up for
service.Also scheduled are:• "Port of Flowers" (1943), Oct. 7. A pair of misfit con men try to
hustle money from some unsuspecting townsfolk in Kinoshita’s droll, touching debut feature.•
"Tragedy of Japan"(1953) , Oct. 28. In post-war Japan, bar hostess Haruko sacrifices
everything to provide for her two children, who repay her with rebuffs and indifference.Jazz on Maumee
resumes with shows set for OctoberTOLEDO – The Brad McNett Trio will perform a Jazz on the Maumee
concert Wednesday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Aqua Lounge at the Grand Plaza Hotel, 444 N Summit
St.Joining the vocalist will be Jake Reichbart, guitar, and Clifford Murphy, bass.Also performing this
month will be: Clifford Murphy and Friends, Oct. 9; Kyle Turner and Friends, Oct. 16; Eric Dickey
& Company, Oct. 23; and vocalist Glenda Biddlestone with Clifford Murphy and Vince Krolak, Oct.
30.Cover charge is $15, $10 for members of the Art Tatum Jazz Society and $5 for students.
