PEMBERVILLE – Eastwood’s Board of Education has given its superintendent a contract extension through
2016.
Brent Welker has a year remaining on his current contract; the board’s action Tuesday morning simply
extends that contract another four years. His salary will remain at $96,046 for the current fiscal year.
"He has earned the confidence of the board and the community by working very hard to communicate and
become a part of the community," said board President Roger Bostdorff after the morning meeting. He
added that Welker "has consistently sustained the academic performance and financial performance of
the district."
It’s been a team effort to achieve excellence in both areas, Bostdorff added, "but Brent leads that
team."
Welker is in his fifth year as superintendent, and previously served as high school principal at
Eastwood.
In his weekly e-mail to community members, he indicated that the new contract will extend through the
summer of 2016, which is when his oldest child will graduate from the district.
The board this summer conducted a performance review with Welker, going over past goals and discussing
those that need to be addressed this year. Last year, goals focused the financial stability of the
district and getting voter approval of the 1-percent income tax issue, and, in regards to the State
Report Card scores, increasing the district’s performance index and showing academic progress.
Looking ahead, Bostdorff said the board will ask Welker to consider options for district facilities based
on enrollment trends. While enrollment at Eastwood is predicted to remain stable, the district needs to
be prepared for any significant increases or decreases.
To that goal, the board scheduled a Facilities Committee meeting for Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. at Pemberville
Elementary.
Also at Tuesday’s meeting, the board:
• Accepted the resignation of high school teacher Gabriela Shllaku. The board set a tentative special
meeting for Aug. 3 to complete its hiring of new staff for the 2011-12 school year.
• Approved a contract with Campbell Inc., Toledo, for a new boiler at the high school at a cost of
$35,000. Due to the urgent necessity, the board waived statutory advertising and competitive bidding
procedures.
• Approved school lunch prices for the upcoming year; prices are unchanged.
