PEMBERVILLE – The UWE met Sept. 15 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church for their yearly organizational meeting.
Present were 21 members and one guest, Carla Rahrig. President Teri Hansen opened the meeting with a
prayer before the potluck meal.
UWE scholarship winners from the past year were the focus of the program. Conneaut first grade teacher
Sue Swegan and her past student, Michael Elko, did a presentation entitled "The Bear’s
Adventure." They told how the scholarship money purchased the bears for the first graders to send
to relatives around the world.
This year’s scholarship applications need to be returned by Dec. 1. If interested, contact Nigh at (419)
287-3769.
UWE’s financial records were reported to be in good form. Mary Ellen Pratt and Treasurer Joan Slebos were
thanked.
Hansen reviewed UWE goals. They are to increase membership and attendance, improve publicity, support a
community service project, and promote the scholarship/grants.
First Vice President Abe Diehl reviewed programs. There will be no January and February meetings and the
next two meetings will be on Tuesday nights, Nov. 1 and Dec. 6.
Mary Ann Hoare thanked members for bringing supplies for the community service project, the Cocoon
Shelter.
Members held a "getting to know you" activity.
Membership incentive awards were presented to Nancy Buchanan and Abe Diehl. Kathy Frederick won the 50/50
raffle. The Social Committee – Joan Slebos, Nigh, Cheryl Sharp, Pattie Butler, and Jill Bortel – were
thanked. Mums were given as door prizes. The next meeting will be Nov. 1 at 7 p.m. at the Pemberville
Library. An auction will benefit the Scholarship/Grant Fund.
