TOLEDO – Aurora Project Aurora House, a supportive housing program for homeless women and children, has
sustained a devastating loss.
The storage facility used to store the donations of Aurora House, at 1035 N. Superior St., and the Elm
St. Learning Center sustained significant damage on Aug. 25 when a fire broke out and then spread to the
neighboring structures. All Aurora residents and staff were evacuated safely with no injuries; however,
the storage facility and all contents – clothing, appliances, tools and linens – were destroyed.
The fire also spread to the Aurora House itself which sustained significant fire, water and smoke damage,
necessitating the relocation of families and staff. In addition the ELC, which houses Aurora’s computer
lab and is also used for storage, had fire and smoke damage. All office supplies, gifts, and residents’
personal items were lost.
The current estimated loss from the fire is $350,000.
Because it is such a significant loss, Aurora is seeking contributions to replace the items destroyed in
the fire. Needed immediately are toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, hair spray, body wash, hair brushes,
flashlights and batteries, first aid kids, Band-Aids, antiseptics, peroxide, medications (aspirin,
ibuprofen and non-drowsy cough/cold medicines), feminine hygiene products, paper towels, tissues, toilet
paper, napkins, paper plates, cleaning supplies, mops, laundry soap, dish towels, non-perishable food,
boys and girls infant clothing and bedding, and gift cards for Kroger, Target, Wal-Mart, Meijer and
other stores.
Local donations may be dropped off at BG Printing LLC, 1180 N. Main St., Suite 6, telephone (419)
352-2416; or at the Sentinel-Tribune office at 300 E. Poe Road.
