BGSU hockey loses at No. 16 Western Michigan

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Western Michigan scored twice in the third period Saturday for a 3-1 victory over
Bowling Green in a Central Collegiate Hockey Association game.
The Broncos’ Derek Roehl snapped a 1-1 tie with 13:46 remaining and Trevor Elias added an insurance goal
on the power play with 10 minutes left.
The teams traded goals in the second period. Western’s J.J. Crew opened the scoring at 2:22, but BG’s
Jordan Samuels-Thomas tied the game at 13:55.
The Falcons were out-shot by a 33-20 margin, including a 26-15 margin during the first two periods.
BG goalie Andrew Hammond played well, stopping 30 shots to keep the Falcons close.
The Broncos, ranked 16th nationally, extended their unbeaten streak to 13 games at 8-0-5. Western is
14-6-9 overall and 9-5-8-4 in the CCHA.
BG fell to 8-19-3, 3-16-3-1.
“I’m not disappointed with our effort,” BG coach Chris Bergeron said. “I’m not disappointed with our
commitment to being intense and focused from start to finish on the weekend. Obviously, I’m disappointed
with the result because there were plays to be made and we didn’t make them. That means all three zones,
all situations, offense, defense. There were plays to be made and we’re not making enough of the them.”

Hammond stopped 61-of-65 shots in the series and has stopped 99-of-105 shots in his last four games. In
those four games, the sophomore has a 1.24 goals-against average and a .943 save percentage.
He made 31 saves Friday in BG’s 2-1 shootout victory.
“He definitely kept us in it at times and that’s what we expect,” Bergeron said.
Jerry Kuhn, who has started every game in goal during Western’s unbeaten streak, made 19 saves
The Falcons were limited to two or fewer goals for the 12th time in their last 14 games, including one
goal eight times.
BG has scored only 58 goals in its 30 games.
“We’re struggling to score goals,” Bergeron said. “One or two goals a game isn’t good enough.”
The Falcons had only one power play attempt in the game, that coming just 1:55 into the third period and
the game still tied 1-1.
Western’s power play was 1-of-6.
BG killed off nine of Western’s 10 power plays in the series. The BG power play was 1-of-4.
Samuels-Thomas’ goal was his team-leading eighth of the season after he was a healthy scratch Friday. He
also leads BG with 18 points. He had two shots on goal and and an on-ice rating of plus-1 Saturday.
