PERRYSBURG – A duo of Russian sisters will open a series of spring musical events at Way Public Library
on a international note with a concert Sunday at 2 p.m.
Violinist Maria and pianist Ekaterina Bessmeltseva, both former students at Bowling Green State
University’s College of Musical Art, will present a recital of classical music from around the world.
This event on the main floor of the library is free and refreshments will be served.
Along with Russian, French and German folk tunes, the sisters will perform Hungarian music such as
"Czardas" by Monti, Romanian music such as Bartok’s Romanian Dances, Piazzolla’s Tangos from
Argentina and Chopin’s Mazurkas from Poland.
Maria Bessmeltseva will receive her doctorate in musical arts from the University of Michigan in May.
Ekaterina Bessmeltseva will receive a second master’s degree in chamber music at the University of South
Florida, also in May. Both have studied at Bowling Green State University.
Winners of a number of prizes, the Bessmeltsevas have performed at many different venues – summer musical
festivals, universities, churches and concert halls.
This event will be followed by four other concerts, ending with the annual Toledo Opera Outreach concert
on April 29.
With the exception of the final concert which is funded by the library’s L. Paul Baldoni Fund, all
concerts are supported financially by the Way Public Library Foundation’s Karen Morley Khan Music Fund.
