Notre Dame finishes sweep of BGSU hockey (2-12-11)

NOTRE DAME, Ind. — Billy Maday scored twice and T.J. Tynan added a goal and two assists Saturday to lead
Notre Dame to a 5-1 victory over Bowling Green and a sweep of the Central Collegiate Hockey Associations
series.
The Fighting Irish built a 2-0 lead on power-play goals from Maday at 7:59 of the first period and Jeff
Costello at 3:50 of the second period.
Cameron Sinclair brought the Falcons within 2-1 at 5:41, but Maday’s second goal at 9:56 enabled ND to
restore its two-goal lead.
ND added two goals in the third period for the final four-goal margin.
The Fighting Irish also won the special teams and finished the game with a 35-14 edge in shots.
ND was 2-of-8 on the power play, and held BG scoreless on all six of its chances with the extra man.
Still, BG had a chance to tie the game 2-2 midway through the second period when it went on the power
play. Instead, the Fighting Irish killed the penalty off and Maday scored eight seconds later on a
breakaway after coming out of the penalty box.
“That goal was the backbreaker,” BG coach Chris Bergeron said.
The Falcons stayed close for almost 30 minutes, but ND took over and out-shot BG by a 26-8 margin over
the final two periods.
BG, a 2-1 loser Friday, fell to 8-21-3 overall and 3-18-3-1 in the CCHA.
ND, which leads the CCHA, ran its record to 18-9-5, 15-6-3-2.
“For five periods this weekend, we competed pretty well,” Bergeron said.
The only bad period for the Falcons was their third period Saturday when they were out-shot 15-3 and had
six penalties.
Although the Falcons didn’t score on the power play, Sinclair’s goal came just 15 seconds after an ND
penalty ended.
“Our power play was OK. It wasn’t bad,” Bergeron said. “We moved the puck around (and had some chances).”

ND’s power play scored on two of its first three attempts.
“The penalty-kill wasn’t very good at all,” Bergeron said.
BG goalie Nick Eno made 30 saves. He didn’t receive much help from his teammates in his first start since
Andrew Hammond had taken over as the No. 1 goalie.
Hammond had 36 saves Friday in his fourth straight start. Hammond and Eno had split BG’s first 14 series

“We’re not giving up 25 shots a game. We’re giving up 35 to 40 and the way Hammy’s played over the last
4½ games was a lot of work,” Bergeron said. “We’ve thrown him into a situation where he’s played every
minute cold turkey. It would be one thing if you had prepared for that all year long.
“We still have hockey to play. By no means was it based on last night’s game. His game was very, very
good. It was more to get him some rest. (Eno) had a decent week of practice and to give Hammy a rest, we
decided to with Eno.”
The Falcons played without two of their regular defensemen.
Sophomore Ian Ruel sat out after he was hit hard during Friday’s game and freshman Jake Sloat missed his
sixth straight game with a quad contusion.
