PERRYSBURG — If anybody had any doubts about Perrysburg’s ability to shoot the basketball before Tuesday
night, chances are those doubts are no more.
The Yellow Jackets’ ability to shoot consistently well allowed them to cruise to a 73-59 non-league
victory at home over Toledo Waite.
Perrysburg gained a 16-point lead by halftime and never allowed the Indians within 14 points the rest of
the way, although Waite out-scored the Yellow Jackets 33-31 in the second half.
“I think we came out and executed our offense well early,” Perrysburg head coach Dave Boyce said. “I
think we controlled the boards early and that enabled us to get ahead. I think we sort of (faltered)
through the middle periods. But I thought offensively we did a good job handling the ball and finding
open guys down the stretch.” PHOTO GALLERY

The Yellow Jackets (13-6) opened the game by shooting lights-out from 3-point territory.
Karter Sell got the scoring going early and often for Perrysburg, as he scored the first nine points of
the game, all coming on triples. He later opened up the second quarter with his fourth and final 3-point
basket en route to scoring 16 points.
Perrysburg out-scored the Indians 19-7 in the first quarter, while shooting 7-of-8 from the floor
including 5-of-5 from three.
But Sell was not the only Perrysburg player to contribute with long-range shots.
Kevin Schenk nailed three of his four 3-point buckets in the first half, while Perrysburg built a 42-26
halftime lead, as it shot 9-of-11 (82 percent) from long-range.
Schenk finished with 15 points.
“Let’s just say we’re a better team when we’re shooting well,” Boyce said. “The fact of the matter is
that’s what (Waite was) giving us. They committed a lot of people to the paint and they were trapping
and that was the open guy sometimes.”
In all, five Yellow Jacket players hit shots from beyond the arc on a night where, as a team, they shot
28-of-44 (64 percent) overall.
In addition to shooting well, Perrysburg out-rebounded the Indians 24-12, which included 15 defensively
compared to Waite’s five.
“(Waite was) committing a lot of people all over to trap which allowed us to get some weak-side boards,”
Boyce said.
“I just think we crashed more,” Perrysburg’s Alec Schmenk said. “We had people triangle rebounding from
the two blocks and from up top which helped us a lot.”
The Yellow Jackets, in addition to their outside shooting, had consistency inside as well, as over 50
percent of their baskets from two-point range came via Jake Pfleghaar. Pfleghaar, who didn’t score more
than six points in any particular quarter, finished the contest with a game-high 18 points and four
rebounds.
“When (Waite) rotated their defense they all cram one side, and then when we did fast ball rotation the
inside and down low was normally open,” Schmenk said.
The Yellow Jacket defense played well in the contest as well, forcing the Indians into 14 turnovers and
holding them to shooting 24-of-52 (44 percent) from the field.
But while Perrysburg did play pretty well in almost every aspect of the game, it still committed 22
turnovers, and that gives Boyce some reason for concern.
“If you look at our chart, they seem to come in bunches and that’s something we’ve certainly got to clean
up,” Boyce said. “When we have one, we’ve got to tighten it up and score the next time down so we don’t
go into a little bit of a tailspin.”
Perrysburg won the junior varsity game 54-24. Austin Bishop led the Yellow Jackets with 15 points.
