11th frame: Blanchard, Jakubowski in bowling spotlight (03-08-11)

Tommy Blanchard and Steve Jakubowski put their names in the bowling spotlight last weekend.
Blanchard became the first youth bowler to shoot an 800 series in Bowling Green. He shot an 801 in the
McDonald’s Majors league at Varsity on Saturday. He had games of 276, 268 and 257. More details will be
published in a future edition.
Jakubowski, a Bowling Green league bowler, made his mark last weekend in the United States Bowling
Congress tournament at the National Bowling Stadium in Reno, Nev. Jakubowski finished with 2,102
all-events total to take the early lead. Jakubowski shot 744 in doubles and 670 in singles to go along
with a 688 set in team Saturday night.
"I just bowled my own game, stayed focus and tried to keep everything simple," Jakubowski told
USBC officials.
That doubles score added to Richie Serrato’s 242 and 625, put them into third place at 1,369. He had
games of 248, 258 and 238 in doubles, a 279 high in team, and 234 and 235 in singles. His singles total
places him in 28th.
Al-Mar Lanes 4, made the top 10 in 10th place at 2,975. Brian Close led the team with a 248 game and 668
series. His team members were Brad Simon (234, 610), Brent Norris (561), Tim Munger (232, 575), and Gary
Schluchter (244, 563).
Nate Henschen teamed with Denny Torgerson for 13th place in doubles at 1,305. Henschen had a 246, 623.

Brian Orth shot games of 225 and 288 in singles for a 688, putting him in 13th place. He bowled 265, 597
in doubles as he teamed with Jessica Simon, for a 1,090 total good for fourth in Classified Doubles. The
"Classified" divisions have average limitations to allow individuals, doubles and teams with
lesser averages a chance to compete for a title.
Chris Lindquist, teamed with his fiancé, Irene Salazar, for 10th in the Classified Doubles at 1,060.
Lindquist had a 613.
Both Lindquist and Yogi Lorenzen had 613 series in singles. Lorenzen had a 234 high game.
Schluchter had 258, 677 in singles good for 21st place. Norris had a 228 high in his 665 in doubles, as
he paired with Dean Bressler, 227, 563, for a 1,228 total good for 43rd place. Close cracked the top 50
in all-events with 1,860.
Tour challenge: Randy Butler won the season-ending Tour Challenge at Varsity Lanes, but it was Joe
Kominek who accumulated the most points for the season to win one free year of league bowling at the
center. In the final session Butler, who had the top seed, defeated Kyle Brossia 222-196 to claim the
$85 first-place prize. Brossia defeated his father, John Brossia 242-207 in the semifinal and Kominek in
the opening match, 229-183.
Team Baker: Varsity will host a Team Baker tournament on March 18 at 7 p.m. The event will feature two
regular games, followed by five Bakers. It will be a handicap event. Contact Varsity to reserve your

Youth of the Week: Youth bowlers who bowled the most pins over their average in any one game last week,
with pins over, were:
Varsity: Bantam/Prep, Jordan Cook, 56; Riley Kepling, 40; Major/Junior, Michael Young, 43; Elise Semko,
40.
Al-Mar: None reported this week.
Surviving the game: The four bowlers eliminated in Al-Mar’s "Surviving the Game" with pins
under average were: Pancha Melendrez, Ladies Major, 110; Roy Ducat, Eagles, 67; Todd Mason, Eagles and
Patsy Lambert, Stadium View, both 43. Each earned $5. There are only 17 bowlers remaining.
