Hammond stepping up in goal for Falcon hockey (02-11-11)

Andrew Hammond

Andrew Hammond has played consistently well since coming to Bowling Green.
And now he finally has the statistics to prove it.
The 6-foot-1, 195-pound sophomore has a 2.74 goals-against average and a .909 save percentage in 18 games
this season, including a 1.24 goals-against and a .943 save mark in his last four games.
He’s expected to start in goal tonight when BG visits 10th-ranked Notre Dame in the first of a two-game
series.
"He just seems to be on top of his game," BG coach Chris Bergeron said. "He fights for
every puck in practice. You wrap a puck around the boards, he’ll race back as hard as he can to get it.
He just seems to be on all of the time with his focus É and his intensity is good. His execution, for
the most part, has been really good. He’s been consistent."
Because the Falcons are only 13-44-9 overall and 7-34-9 in the CCHA since the start of last season, the
statistics of Hammond and fellow goalie Nick Eno have suffered. But they’ve given BG a chance to win
almost every game.
Hammond also plays with tremendous poise, making tough saves look ridiculously easy.
"I’m more confident and once you have that confidence, you can go out there and react to plays, and
you never second-guess yourself," Hammond said. "You get in a mind-set where you feel like
nothing’s going to go in and if it does, it’s because of a really good shot or an unfortunate
bounce."
IRISH: ND is 16-9-5 overall and 13-6-3-2 in the CCHA, one point behind Miami and one point ahead of
Michigan. It’s fifth nationally in scoring (3.67 goals per game), but eighth in the league in goals
allowed (2.83 gpg).
"They’re a young hungry team," Bergeron said. "They’ve got lots and lots of talent. Their
competition level is extremely high. Their skill is high. That’s the combination for a pretty good
team."
STARS: ND freshmen forwards T.J. Tynan and Anders Lee are two of the league’s best players.
Tynan is the league’s third-leading scorer with 39 points in 30 games on 18 goals and 21 assists. Lee is
sixth in the league with 30 points on 18 goals and 15 assists.
JOHNSON: Sophomore Mike Johnson is ND’s No. 1 goalie, posting a 2.63 goals-against average and a .902
save percentage in 25 games.
