BGSU students tapped for Phi Beta Kappa honors

Eighty Bowling Green State University students – both continuing students and recent graduates – were
inducted this spring into Phi Beta Kappa, the oldest and most respected scholastic honor society in the
nation.
Phi Beta Kappa inducts junior and senior liberal arts students who have distinguished themselves as
scholars. To be eligible for membership, students need academic records matching 16 criteria for
excellent classroom performance.
Following is a list of this year’s BGSU inductees from Wood County. Class ranks are as of spring
semester.
Dana Chalupa, of Bowling Green, graduated summa cum laude in May with a bachelor’s degree in sociology.
Chalupa was the first undergraduate research assistant at BGSU’s National Center for Marriage Research,
and a member of the Latino Student Union. The 2005 Bowling Green High School graduate’s parents are Dr.
Federico Chalupa, Bowling Green, and Manuela Pena of Toledo.
Angela Cogar graduated cum laude in May with a bachelor’s degree in geography. The daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Carl Cogar, rural Bowling Green, she is a 2005 graduate of Bowling Green High School and was a
member of the Geography Club and the Russian Club at BGSU.
A senior majoring in political science, James Howes has been treasurer of the German Club and a member of
Pi Sigma Alpha, the political science honor society. He graduated from Bowling Green High School in 2007
and is the son of Geoffrey Howes and Christen Giblin, Bowling Green.
Katherine Onasch graduated summa cum laude in May with a bachelor’s degree in biology. A 2005 graduate of
Maumee Valley Country Day School, she served as president of the Pre-Veterinary Medical Club. The
daughter of Charles and Christine Onasch, Bowling Green, she is interested in large animal medicine and
will attend veterinary school at Ohio State University this fall.
Katie Hartigan, a psychology and sociology major from Grand Rapids, graduated summa cum laude in May with
a bachelor of arts degree. A 2006 graduate of Otsego High School, she was president of the Undergraduate
Psychology Association and a member of Psi Chi psychology honor society. She was also a building manager
at the Bowen-Thompson Student Union. The daughter of Pam Steele, she spent last year’s fall break
serving in the South Bronx of New York City.
Bowling Green resident Caitlin Rex graduated magna cum laude in May with a bachelor’s degree in biology.
A member of the Honors Program, she was also trip coordinator for the Outdoor Program and studied in
England her junior year. The 2005 Bowling Green High School graduate is the daughter of Robert and
Winnie Rex.
A senior majoring in French and liberal studies, Rebekah Skoog also graduated from Bowling Green High
School in 2005. The daughter of William and Elaine Skoog, Bowling Green, she is a member of the Honors
Scholars Learning Community and the French honor society. She studied in France and Burkina Faso
(Africa) in 2007 and was assistant volunteer coordinator for the Black Swamp Arts Festival in 2008.
Brian Winkle graduated cum laude in May with a bachelor of arts degree in psychology. The 2005 Bowling
Green High School graduate is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Steve Winkle, Bowling Green.
Nicholas Horen graduated summa cum laude in May with a bachelor’s degree in biology. The son of John and
Mary Horen, Grand Rapids, he was a track coach for the Special Olympics and active in the Wood Lane
Community Friend Program. He was also involved in microbiology research and was treasurer of the
American Medical Student Association. The 2005 Otsego High School graduate will be attending medical
school at the University of Toledo this fall.
A senior majoring in environmental science, Rebecca Brinker has been a resident adviser and is a member
of the Wood-Lucas Chapter of Pheasants Forever. A 2006 graduate of Eastwood High School, she is the
daughter of Wynn and Jan Brinker, Pemberville.
Katherine Cooperman, a sociology and women’s studies major, graduated cum laude in May with a bachelor of
arts degree. The daughter of Ronald and Judith Cooperman, Perrysburg, her memberships included the
Organization for Women’s Issues, the Honors Student Association, the Honors Program and Golden Key honor
society. She is a 2005 graduate of Perrysburg High School.
A junior majoring in biology/pre-med, Sarah Dariano is involved in the Honors Program, Alpha Phi sorority
and Dance Marathon. She has also been a tour coordinator, resident adviser and member of the Homecoming
Student Steering Committee. The 2006 graduate of Perrysburg High School is the daughter of Doug Dariano,
Perrysburg.
Fostoria resident Jordan Cravens graduated summa cum laude in May with a bachelor’s degree in journalism.
The 2005 graduate of Fostoria High School is a member of Kappa Tau Alpha, a journalism honor society.
She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Cravens.
