BGSU grads get video prizes
Two recent graduates of Bowling Green State University’s digital arts program were among five award
winners in the 3D Games division of GameJam!, a new international video-game competition.
James Maloney, who received a bachelor of fine arts degree in May, won the Funniest Award for his
"Henry the Frog" character, which uniquely bounced twice before jumping. Greg Wark, who earned
his BFA degree in May 2008, took the Crowd Favorite Award for his "Creepy Crawler," which was
able to compress its body to crawl under low passages as well as walk upright.
The winners were announced during SIGGRAPH 2009, the 36th International Conference and Exhibition on
Computer Graphics and Interactive Techniques. The conference was held Aug. 3-7 in New Orleans.
Maloney, Wark and Brian Nixon, a May 2008 graduate, were among 27 participants from around the world
selected to compete in the first GameJam! In the competition, teams created a 3D game and a 2D game
during a 24-hour period. Participants included industry professionals and students.
Nature of BG photos sought
Downtown Bowling Green’s Publications Committee is seeking photographs for its 2011 wall calendar,
"Bowling Green: Natural Beauty In All Seasons." The calendar is meant to capture Bowling
Green’s natural beauty throughout the seasons in photographs taken by community members.
"We are announcing the theme now to give people enough time to plan their submissions," said
committee member Becky Laabs. She added, "We really want to stress that we are looking for seasonal
images of nature that are easily recognizable as being from Bowling Green."
Color photos will be accepted any time until April 30, 2010. Submissions must be in high resolution jpeg
digital format.
All photo submissions will be included in a gallery showing that will accompany the publication of the
calendar. Photographers whose work is chosen for the calendar will receive complimentary copies of the
calendar.
The 2010 calendar featuring children’s art should be available in a few weeks.
