Marine’s wife, daughter die in Michigan crash
BLENDON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) – The wife and new daughter of a Marine who was away at basic training in
San Diego when the child was born were killed in a crash before he had a chance to meet the infant.
Morgan DeHaan, 19, and 4-week-old Hannah died following the crash last week in Ottawa County, about 12
miles southwest of Grand Rapids. Another daughter, 21-month-old Jordyn, was injured but is expected to
recover.
Tim Wiersma, brother-in-law to Tim DeHaan, said Morgan DeHaan had planned to visit her husband soon. The
former Zeeland High School students married a year ago and planned to move to wherever the military sent
them.
"The real shame is Tim had never met Hannah," Wiersma said.
Morgan DeHaan was driving a Ford Explorer with the two children in car seats in the back, when police say
she went through a stop sign at an intersection and collided with a pickup. Hannah was ejected from the
vehicle.
"The seat could not handle that much impact," said sheriff’s Lt. Steve Kempker. He said both
car seats were properly secured.
Morgan DeHaan’s father, Stephen Kacmar of Holland, said the couple earlier this year moved back to the
Holland area from Butte, Mont., where Tim DeHaan had attended Montana Tech. His daughter began living
with her husband’s parents after he went to basic training in May.
