TONTOGANY – Matt Weisenborn and Tony Gerwin provide Otsego with two of the best guards in the Suburban
Lakes League.
If the Knights can develop an inside game to complement their senior guards, they believe they’ll have a
chance to finish in the top half of the SLL.
Weisenborn was a first-team All-SLL and all-district selection, and Gerwin was second-team all-league
last season when the Knights finished 11-10 overall and 7-7 in the SLL.
The Knights return five lettermen in all.
"They’re our strength," Otsego coach Jim Bostdorff said of Weisenborn and Gerwin. "They’re
not only good basketball players, but they’re quality kids, the kids you want in your program for the
younger kids to watch.
"They’re two very talented kids, and you couldn’t ask for nicer kids who make the right decisions
and do the right thing."
The 5-foot-10 Weisenborn averaged 16.0 points and 4.2 assists per game last season, shooting 49 percent
from the field, 33 percent on 3-pointers and 76 percent from the free-throw line. He’s the team’s point
guard.
"We’re spoiled with him because he makes good decisions with the ball," Bostdorff said.
Gerwin (5-10) made 32 percent of his 3-point shots last season.
"He’s dead-eye shooter and he can handle the ball.," Bostdorff said.
Sam Forshey, a 6-1 junior post, is Otsego’s other returning starter.
"We probably pushed him hard last year, but we needed him," Bostdorff said. "His game is
going to be much better this year and he’ll step into more of a scorer’s role."

Also returning in the post is 6-0 senior Richard Solether. Also vying for playing time inside are 6-4
seniors Joe Wilson and Tom Wilson, and 6-3 freshman A.C. Limes.
"They’re going to help us," Bostdorff said. "We think A.C. can score and he’s been our
best rebounder in practice."
The team’s other returning letterman is 5-11 sophomore Nate Downs.
Also vying for playing time are 5-10 senior Mark Young, 5-9 seniors A.J. Rodgers and Matt Caris, and 6-2
freshman Ryan Smoyer.
The Knights scored and allowed the same number of points per game last season, 52.2. They expect to play
a fast-paced style again.
"We’re going to get our points from our guards, and anything we get inside is a bonus,"
Bostdorff said. "We have to get better inside. We’re unproven there, but if we can we can get some
points and rebounds inside, we’ll be all right. We’ll be pushing the ball as much as possible because we
have the personnel to do that.
"So far, our defense has been good. We have a little bit more size and that helps us."
Bostdorff said defending champion Eastwood, Genoa and Elmwood are the top three teams in the SLL.
"We fit in right after them somewhere," Bostdorff said. "I like our senior leadership from
our two guards and we’ll go as far as they take us. If we can get some help on the inside, we’ll have a
chance to be a really decent team."
