Marist rallies to down BG women, 70-65

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. — Bowling Green held a 16-point lead, 39-23, late in the first half, but could not
hold on as Marist rallied for a 70-65 victory in the Preseason WNIT Saturday. The Falcons are now 1-2
overall and Marist is 2-1.
Marist took its first lead, since the first basket of the game, with 10:15 to play in the game on a
3-point play from Corielle Yarde.
The Falcons would regain the lead on a 3-pointer from Tracy Pontius, 53-52, with 9:05 left, but Erica
Allenspach’s layup with 8:43 remaining put Marist ahead and the Falcons never led again.
There were three ties in the late going, the final one after two free throws from BG’s Lauren Prochaska
tied the game at 65 with one minutes remaining.
Allenspach then put Marist ahead to stay with a basket with 40 seconds remaining. Rachele Fitz made two
free throws and Yard made one to seal the victory.
Fitz played 36 minutes and finished with 28 points, eight rebounds and one assist. She was 10-of-14 from
the field and 8-of-9 from the free-throw line. Yarde added 11 points and six rebounds. Allenspach had 11
points, six rebounds and seven assists while playing 40 minutes.
Marist held a huge 32-8 edge in points in the paint and out-scored BG 41-26 in the second half.
Tara Breske had a team-high 16 points for the Falcons, including a career-best three 3-pointers. Tracy
Pontius and Jen Uhl each finished with 13 points. It was three 3-pointers in the span of 1:07 late in
the first half from Uhl that helped BG take its 16-point lead.
The Falcons made nine 3-pointers in the first half, but made on 3-of-14 shots from behind the arc in the
second half. For the game BG was 19-of-55 from the field (34.5 percent) as Prochaska, Pontius and Tamika
Nurse were a combined 9-of-33.
Prochaska and Pontius each finished with seven rebounds and Breske had six.
The Falcons play at Oakland (Mich.) on Tuesday with tipoff at 6:30 p.m.
