Falcon hockey loses series finale

MANKATO, Minn. — Andrew Hammond’s excellent goaltending wasn’t enough for Bowling Green’s hockey team
Saturday night.
The freshman made 37 saves in his collegiate debut, but Minnesota State-Mankato still had enough offense
to post a 4-1 victory over the Falcons.
Hammond provided BG with a chance to steal a victory for two periods on a night they were out-shot by a
41-23 margin.
The Mavericks, who have good team speed and are a bigger and stronger team than BG, scored once in each
of the first two periods and increased the lead to 4-0 in the third period. MSM’s first two goals came
on the power play.
BG’s Josh Boyd spoiled MSM’s shutout bid with 9:12 remaining in the game.
Rylan Galiardi had two goals and one assist, and Kurt Davis added one goal and one assist for the
Mavericks. MSM’s Kevin Murdock made 22 saves, 12 coming in the third period.
The win competed for a sweep of the season-opening series the Mavericks, who were 3-2 winners Friday.
Hammond made 12 saves in the first period and 16 stops in the second period, but held MSM to just the two
goals. The Falcons had only 10 shots on goal during the first two periods.
"He played great,’" BG coach Dennis Williams said, adding two of MSM’s were "fluky"
as they went in off Falcon players.
It was BG’s second excellent game in goal in as many nights after junior Nick Eno stopped 32 shots
Friday.
"Our goalies were very good and that’s a great problem to have," Williams said. "Now, we
need to get them some help and do a better job of clearing the front of the net."
The Falcons struggled to score last season as they averaged just 2.23 goals per game and scored at just
12.2 percent on the power play. And scoring figures to be a problem again this season as BG has limited
offensive skill.
"It’s not that we didn’t work hard, but we ran out of gas," Williams said. "We have to
continue to work on our conditioning. We took some hooking and interference penalties because we
couldn’t keep up with the pace, that’s unacceptable."
The BG power play was scoreless in eight attempts after a 1-of-7 effort Friday.
"We had our chances on the power play," Williams said. BG had 12 shots on goal with the extra
man. "We have to work harder at getting loose pucks, getting traffic in front and being quicker
with our puck movement.
"We have to get to the point where we’re thinking two, three plays ahead and move the puck quicker,
so we don’t give the defense a chance to set up in the shooting and passing lanes."
The Maverick power play finished 2-of-9 after failing to score on all seven of its chances in the first
game.
"Even though we gave up two goals, our penalty-kill wasn’t bad at all and goaltending is a key part
of killing penalties," Williams said. "(Hammond) was very good against their power play and
made a number of big saves."
Jordan Samuel-Thomas assisted on Boyd’s goal, giving him three assists in the series.
The Falcons return to action next Friday night at
7:05 when they host the U.S. 18 team in an exhibition contest. BG then hosts Providence Oct. 23-24 in a
non-league series.
