Falcons pay a penalty in 5-1 loss

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. — Bowling Green’s hockey team couldn’t overcome too many penalties and Ferris State’s
power play Friday night.
Ferris scored four straight goals in the second period — the first three coming on the power play in a
four-minute span — en route to a 5-1 win in a Central Collegiate Hockey Association game.
Jordan Samuels-Thomas gave BG a 1-0 lead just 59 seconds into the second period as the freshman wing
scored a goal for the third straight game.
But Ferris rallied to go ahead for good in the second period.
The Bulldogs tied the game at 7:51 on Blair Riley’s goal with two Falcons in the penalty box, and Travis
Ouellette at 9:28 and Matthew Kirzinger at 12:07 added 5-on-4 power-play goals for a 3-1 lead.
Ferris made it 4-1 on Justin Menke’s goal at 15:57.
The loss kept BG winless at 0-6-1 overall and 0-2-1-1 in the CCHA. Ferris is 6-3, 1-2.
BG attempts to earn a split of the series tonight at 5:05.
Ferris’s power play finished 4-of-11, while BG was 0-of-5.
Eighteen penalties, all minors, were called in the game, with the Falcons receiving 12 of the penalties.
The Falcons played short-handed for 17:28 of the 60-minute game.
‘We took a lot of penalties that were uncharacteristic penalties for us,” BG coach Dennis Williams said.

The Falcons are averaging a respectable 6.8 penalties and 15 minutes per game.
“I wasn’t too sure why we were playing like that,” Williams said. “We have to clean up the penalties and
not let our emotions get the best of us.”
The teams played a scoreless first period in which Ferris held a 10-7 edge in shots and failed to score
on three power plays. BG didn’t score on its only chance with the extra man.
“We weathered the storm and played a pretty solid first period,” Williams said.
Ferris scored on its first three power plays in the second period.
The Falcons already were short a man because of a too many men on the ice penalty at 5:58 when Ian Ruel
was penalized for cross-checking and grasping the facemask at 7:44.
Riley scored just seven seconds after Ruel went off, leaving BG with the rest of Ruel’s double minor and
BG’s James McIntosh was penalized for cross-checking at 10:48.
Ouellette and Kirzinger scored during that span, and the Bulldogs then killed off BG’s two-man advantage
of 1:19 in the last two minutes of the period.
Riley added another 5-on-3 goal for a 5-1 lead just 59 seconds into the third period.
The Falcons were out-shot by a 35-23 margin, with 17 of Ferris’ shots coming on the power play.
“We can’t afford to get into a special teams game,” Williams said. “When we play 5-on-5, we’re a good
team.”
Andrew Hammond and Nick Eno split time in goal for BG.
Hammond, who had been outstanding in the last the three games, stopped just 14-of-18 shots in the first
35:57.
He was replaced by Eno, who played well and allowed just one goal in 17 shots.
Eno, who hadn’t been sharp of late, will start tonight.
