Toledo Jazz Orchestra revisits Basie, Ellington session

TOLEDO – Toledo Jazz Orchestra will revisit the meeting of jazz legends Count Basie and Duke Ellington in
its Battle of the Bands concert on Sunday at 3 p.m. at The Valentine Theatre, 410 Adams St..
The concept of the concert is based on the recording "First Time! The Count Meets the Duke"
featuring the bands of Basie and Ellington.
Toledo Jazz Orchestra will perform some of the selections from the historical recording, along with
original and contemporary arrangements of both bands.
The band will feature former Duke Ellington trombonist Ed Gooch and lead trumpeter John Harner from the
Stan Kenton Band. Vocalist Ramona Collins will perform music from the Duke Ellington songbook, as well
as arrangements penned for Dianne Schuur and Ella Fitzgerald with the Count Basie Orchestra.
The band will perform many selections, including "Take the ‘A’ Train," "Caravan,"
"Satin Doll," "Do Nothin’ ‘Til You Hear From Me," "Blues in Hoss’ Flat,"
"The Mooche," "Kid from Redbank," "I Left My Heart in San Francisco"
(arranged by Quincy Jones for the Basie Band).
