Lake Twp. has two levies on November ballot

MILLBURY — The Lake Township Board of Trustees held a Town Hall meeting last week to answer questions regarding the levies on this year’s ballot. The board also handed out flyers to those who attended, comprised of information regarding both levies.

The township will have two levies to support the fire department on the ballot at this year’s Nov.5 election.

Residents of the township are being asked to renew the current 1-mill levy and support a new 1.5-mill levy.

The 1-mill levy funds maintenance, equipment, training, and paid-per-call staffing in the fire department. This was initially passed in 1990 at the property valuations at the time, and generates approximately $250,000 annually.

The current levy is vital to be able to continue to operate the fire department, according to trustees. who have said they appreciates the continued support throughout the years in renewing this levy.

Tax rates will not change for the current levy as it is a renewal.

The new 1.5-mill levy will be used to hire four full-time paramedics. As departments around the area are hiring more full-time staff, Lake Township is losing paramedics. The new levy allows the township to pay a competitive wage along with benefits.

The new levy will allow the township to provide additional Advanced Life Support (ALS) coverage for the township, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Trustees have said that the new levy is vital to be able to provide the highest level of care to the residents and guests that travel through the township.

The new levy will cost a homeowner of a $100,000 home about $53 a year or $4.42 a month.
