Northwood tops Locomotives, 18-7

MONTPELIER — Northwood evened its record to 4-4 with an 18-7 Toledo Area Athletic Conference victory at Montpelier Friday. The Locomotives fall to 2-6.

With 27 seconds remaining in the first half, Julien Chappell scored on a six-yard run to break scoreless tie and put the Rangers up 6-0 at intermission.

Chappell scored on another six-yard run just over two-and-a-half minutes into the fourth quarter and Northwood’s Jason St. Claire broke away for a 62-yard TD run with 4:40 remaining in the game.

Montpelier got on the board on a 12-yard pass from Hayden Sharps to Wesley Hartsock with 2:34 remaining. Kamron Smith added the conversion kick for the Locomotives.

Northwood finished with 262 yards on the ground, 77 yards through the air, and 14 first downs, while Montpelier had 73 yards rushing, 146 yards passing, and 20 first downs.

St. Claire ran for 129 yards on seven carries, Chappell ran for 55 yards on 13 carries, Tyler Osley had 15 carries for 59 yards, Landon Kidd had three carries for 13 yards, and Luke Szekerez had three carries for seven yards for the Rangers.

Osley completed 3-of-10 passes for 77 yards, and Montpelier quarterback Hayden Sharps completed 15-of-34 passes for 146 yards.

St. Claire caught one pass for 50 yards and Szekeres had two catches for 27 yards. For Montpelier, Griffin Cooley had seven catches for 89 yards and Smith had four catches for 20 yards.

Defensively for the Rangers, 5-foot-9, 201-pound senior nose guard Justin Espino had three fumble recoveries.
