Millbury OKs weed ordinance

MILLBURY – Council has set a fee to cut weeds and remove junk in the village.

At its Sept. 9 meeting, council members approved an ordinance that set $125 per hour as a minimum fee for the first hour and $125 per hour thereafter, prorated at half-hour intervals, for cutting and trimming noxious weeds.

A fee of $500 per hour will be charged for removing anything unsightly or unsanitary plus the cost of disposing of the items.

The fees will be charged when the owner fails to comply with notice.

Zoning director Jeff Mraovich reported zoning enforcement letters had been sent to a resident on Abbey Road for a shed and Cherry Street for weeds.

Sheds are not allowed in front yards and must be located 5 feet from side and rear property lines, he said.

Village personnel had started cutting grass that was several feet tall on cut on Penny Lane and gave up, he said. The property owner was billed accordingly.

The “boat lady” was back with weeds growing around the watercraft, he said.

Council also approved an ordinance allowing private discharge of fireworks in the village during certain dates and times.

In 2021, Gov. Mike DeWine signed House Bill 172 that legalized the private discharge of fireworks on certain days. Local jurisdictions were given the authority to set their own restrictions.

The village agreed that fireworks can be discharged on Chinese New Year, Cinco de Mayo, Memorial Day weekend, Juneteenth, July 3-5 as well as the Friday, Saturday and Sunday preceding and following, Labor Day weekend and Diwali. Fireworks also will be allowed until 11:45 p.m. on New Year’s Eve and 12:30 a.m. on New Year’s Day.

Also at the meeting, council:

• Learned AEDs had been delivered and were waiting for locations to be approved for installation.

• Was told the village website is now up to date.

Council Member Kandy Takas said adding tabs for meeting minutes and agendas costs money.

“We need to look at how we’re getting information out to our community,” she said. “We’re not doing a good job.”

The post office does not have a community board, it was announced.

Council will create a media communications committee to address the issue.

• Passed a resolution to enter into a contract with Lake Township for $21,716 to dura-patch and crack seal certain streets in the village, including but not limited to Cherry and Main streets.
