Quick start propels Eastwood to 48-7 win

WAUSEON — Wauseon gave Eastwood short fields on the Eagles’ first two possessions, and the Indians were never able to recover, falling to the Eagles 48-7 in a non-league game at Harmon Field Friday.

For Eastwood, it was all about avenging last year’s 14-7 loss to the Indians at Freedom Field.

“So, last year, these guys beat us,” said Eastwood senior running back Kevin Lewis. “We came out with a lot more intensity today, and we know we can carry through with the offense and defense, and then when they come through, that’s how it is.”

Eastwood 6-foot-2, 230-pound senior lineman Paul Lautzenheiser added, “We’ve been preparing this whole week, putting in the work. We had a sour taste in our mouth from last year when they beat us. So, we were just looking to come out and play our best game.”

Eastwood, which 398 total yards to Wauseon’s 163, was led by junior quarterback Drew Luidhardt, who completed 12-of-15 passes for 220 yards and five TDs with no interceptions.

Senior Andre Lewis had seven catches for 110 yards and three TDs, Senior Dayquan Oliver had two catches for 63 yards and one TD, senior Brock Messinger had a catch for 28 yards, senior Connor Norton had a catch for 11 yards, and sophomore Cam Schumaker had a catch for eight yards.

Kevin Lewis led Eastwood’s running game, carrying the ball 14 times for 131 yards and two TDs. Lewis knows who to give the credit to — his offensive line.

“They played amazingly. The holes were perfect,” Lewis said. “I’ll give a lot of credit to them — without them, I don’t think I’d be getting the amount of yardage I did today.”

Eastwood coach Sam Cotterman knew that the Indians were trying to rebuild, but it is the second time in two weeks the Eagles won with a running clock the second half.

“We’re still trying to get rolling and get better every week,” Cotterman said. “We knew that they just implemented a new offense this year. It looked like they were still trying to figure themselves out.

“We really couldn’t concentrate on that. We had to concentrate on our game plan, making sure we were disciplined,” Cotterman continued. “We really concentrated on ourselves this week and making sure that we take a step forward from last week. So, we’re just trying to keep building on what we’ve got going.”

On the game’s opening possession, a snap went over Wauseon junior punter Sean O’Connor’s head and the Eagles recovered at the Indians’ 25-yard line. Five plays later, Luidhardt threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Andre Lewis.

Wauseon’s next punt was blocked by Oliver and the Eagles took over at Wauseon’s 4-yard line. After a Wauseon offsides penalty put the ball on the 2-yard and Luidhardt fell on a mishandled snap for a 6-yard loss, Kevin Lewis scored on an 8-yard TD run. Just like that, the Eagles led 14-0.

Later in the game, Norton also blocked a punt, leading to another short field and touchdown.

The Eagles continued their onslaught until they led 35-0 at halftime, putting the game out of reach. Eastwood improves to 3-0 while the Indians are winless in three games.

“Obviously, we can’t have a bad punt snap and get two other punts blocked and give them the easy 21 points,” Wauseon coach Shawn Moore said. “You can’t do that against good teams, and Eastwood is a good team.”

It did not help Wauseon that Eastwood’s defense had six sacks, putting Wauseon junior quarterback Kahle Albright into minus 44 yards rushing. Eastwood senior linebacker Kadyn Donnell led the Eagles with two sacks,

Norton led Eastwood’s defense with seven tackles, Messinger had 5½ tackles, and also getting sacks were Lautzenheiser, Jason Young, Kevin Lewis, and Sawyer Mason.

Lautzenheiser, who had three tackles for a loss, said there is a reason the team celebrates together, even though five different defenders recorded sacks. When he got his sack, it was his teammates he looked to.

“There is a lot of energy, but I turn around and look at my teammates and celebrate with them because it’s all a team game,” Lautzenheiser said.

But Albright, when he had time to throw, did complete 6-of-13 passes for 136 yards and a 65-yard touchdown strike to senior Wyatt Smith in the fourth quarter.

The Eagles had 20 first downs to the Indians’ 10, but Wauseon had nearly five minutes more of possession time.

“We told them they had their moments. We did some good things,” Moore said. “We were able to move the ball offensively. I thought we did a nice job mixing our run and our pass a little bit more.

“We just couldn’t finish in the end zone. We came up short a couple times, so we’ll keep building on the good moments that we had and learn from our mistakes.”

As a team, Wauseon was held to minus-8 yards rushing, although junior back Julian Jasso ran for 26 yards on six carries.

Smith caught three passes for 91 yards, freshman Allen Bock caught a pass for 26 yards, and sophomore Xavier Molina and senior Mitchell Hartman both had receptions for 13 yards.
