FINDLAY — Perrysburg boys soccer arrived at Elmer Graham Stadium Thursday facing a Findlay team that was 2-0 in Northern Lakes League Buckeye Conference play, including a 3-2 win over Anthony Wayne.

Meanwhile, the Yellow Jackets had already lost to AW, 2-1, earlier this season, but that didn’t appear to matter as Perrysburg dominated possession on their way to a 4-0 win over the Trojans.

“Things are starting to come together a little bit,” Perrysburg coach Dennis Jeansonne said. “We made a little bit of a formation change.

“The guys are really starting to get some energy, starting to get creative, which is what we want them to do. We want the guys to be creative and the boys are playing fantastically right now.”

Perrysburg, the defending NLL Buckeye Division champions, improves to 3-1-1 on the season, including 2-1 in the Buckeye Division, while Findlay drops to 3-2-1 and 2-1.

Perrysburg outshot Findlay 24-10, controlling nearly 80% of possession time, and the Yellow Jackets had a 12-4 advantage in shots on goal.

Jeansonne said controlling possession and not allowing the Trojans to get their offense in motion was key.

“We know that team can be dangerous when they get a chance to go forward, so we wanted to make sure we controlled everything to limit their chances,” Jeansonne said. “Our guys controlled the ball, they were creative, they were patient and played very well.”

Findlay coach Kevin Shenise admitted he expected a different outcome.

“I think our expectations coming into the game were a little bit different,” Shenise said. “It’s not the outcome that we wanted.

“Nothing against Perrysburg — they played a great game. They executed their game plan exactly how they wanted to. Tonight was not our best night. This is an opportunity for us to grow and learn and hopefully get on a different track.”

Perrysburg senior midfielder Omar Touray scored both first half goals, the first on a rebound of a shot by sophomore midfielder Alex Bowe just eight minutes and 12 seconds after the opening kickoff.

Eleven minutes and three seconds later, on a pass from senior midfielder Caden Williamson, Touray beat a defender and scored to put the Jackets up, 2-0.

“I’ve got good teammates. They found me, running in line and I had two good finishes,” Touray said.

In the second half, Perrysburg junior forward Brayden Heitmeyer, the football team’s place kicker, sent a long cross across the field that caught senior forward London Stock perfectly, and Stock beat a defender to put Perrysburg up 3-0 just five minutes and 48 seconds after the second half kickoff.

Fifteen minutes later, Perrysburg junior forward Karson Klapper was fouled by Findlay junior defender Charlie Ernst just outside the keeper’s box.

Heitmeyer found the net on the ensuing free kick, just like when he booted a 35-yard field goal for Perrysburg’s football team, putting the Jackets up, 4-0, with 20:22 remaining.

Perrysburg senior goalkeeper Tucker Benge and Freddie Dowling only needed five saves to combine for the shutout, thanks to non-goalie saves by defenders like senior Isaac Klapper and junior midfielder Ben Seuberling.

Touray said it was important for the Jackets to rebound from the loss to AW.

“We came out with a different mentality,” Touray said. “We’ve been working on that, training right after that Anthony Wayne loss. We just had to come and beat this team. We knew we were a better team.”

The Yellow Jackets and Trojans will meet again at Steinecker Stadium at 7 p.m. on Oct. 1. Shenise is glad his team will get a shot at a rematch.

“That’s the benefit of the league, right?” Shenise said.
