Weston man pleads guilty to rape

A Weston man already in prison for rape has pleaded guilty to the same charge with the same victim in a second case.

Daniel Stump, 44, appeared Tuesday in the courtroom of Wood County Common Pleas Judge Matt Rege.

He was indicted in January for three counts of rape.

He pleaded guilty to one count; the other two charges were dismissed.

From Oct. 1-31, 2022, he engaged in sexual conduct with a woman whose ability to resist or consent was substantially impaired because of a mental or physical condition.

Also in 2022, the Wood County Sheriff’s Office was contacted about a sexual assault that had occurred in Weston.

The victim, who was 26 years old at the time, lived in a group home and had the understanding of a 6 to 9-year-old, according to previous statements made in court.

Another friend gave Stump her number and he called the group home and asked the victim if she wanted to go for a ride. He drove them back to his home in Weston and had sex with her against her will. Later that day, Stump returned the victim to the group home.

Stump pleaded guilty to one count of rape in April 2023 and was sentenced to a minimum of eight years.

He is incarcerated in the North Central Correctional Institute in Marion.

Defense attorney Steven Spitler asked the sentence for the new case run concurrently with what he is already serving.

When asked if he wanted to comment, Stump said, “nope, I’m good.”

Reger imposed a minimum sentence of 11 years with a maximum of 16.5 years due to Reagan Tokes Act regulations, to be served concurrently with his current sentence.

This sentence takes the place of the one imposed in 2023, meaning Stump will serve a minimum of 11 years.

Upon his release from prison, he will have to register as a Tier III sex offender, requiring lifetime registration every 90 days.
