TOLEDO — The Perrysburg girls soccer team came out Wednesday night scoring four goals in the first half on Whitmer’s home turf, and the game was effectively over at that point.

But Perrysburg kept their foot down and tallied another six goals in the second half to win 10-0 at Whitmer Memorial Stadium in a Northern Lakes League Buckeye Divsion game.

From the jump it was evident Perrysburg was going to own possession and do most of the scoring. Perrysburg fired home three goals all within the first 20 minutes of the match.

Seven different Yellow Jackets found the back of the net on the night, showing off the team’s offensive capabilities. Leading the way with a hat trick was Perrysburg junior Emma Ogdahl, including back-to-back goals to end the first half.

All night Perrysburg was methodical — they found spaces in the defense, connected on passes easily, and got many good looks on net.

“We’ve been finding out that a lot of teams want to pack the box against us,” noted Perrysburg assistant coach Dan Schlieman. “So we want to keep it a little more east to west rather than north to south and work the ball a bit more to find those openings.”

The second half was much of the same stellar offense from the Jackets. Ogdahl topped off her hat trick and Grace Legendonk found the back of the net twice. Including a deflection goal off a corner kick and a nice header as the game’s final goal.

Perrysburg will look to build on their excellent play when they travel to Cuyahoga Falls to take on the Welsh Jesuit Warriors at 4 p.m. on Saturday. With this win over Whitmer the Jackets’ record improves to 3-1 on the year.

As for Whitmer, it was a game to forget. That being said, there was a bright spot for the Panthers. The team’s anchor and goalie Mandee Funk was under fire all night from the Perrysburg offense.

Over 25 shots were sent her direction and she saved over half of those. When under the hail of a hundred arrows, a warrior is lucky if his shield blocks five, says Whitmer coach Patryk Lee.

“Even after a game like this she did really well to encourage her teammates and have a positive outlook on a game that’s lopsided,” said Lee.

“There could’ve been many, many more goals scored if she wasn’t in there.” Sadly, a sole goalkeeper cannot propel a team to victory. Whitmer didn’t put any shots on the Perrysburg goal and was simply outclassed in all facets of the game.

Whitmer falls to 0-4 on the year and will look for their first victory when they travel to Findlay for a 7 p.m. game on the following Wednesday.
