All lanes on the Ohio Turnpike near milepost 49 in Lucas County have reopened to traffic following multiple vehicle crashes earlier today.
According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol:
The first crash, which occurred at about 5:34 a.m. near milepost 48 eastbound in Swanton Township (Lucas County), involved four commercial vehicles and one passenger vehicle. The crash resulted in one fatality and three occupants were transported to area hospitals with unknown injuries.
The second crash, which occurred at about 5:59 a.m. near milepost 49 eastbound in Fulton Township (Fulton County), involved two commercial vehicles and one passenger vehicle. One of the commercial vehicles was hauling sulfuric acid. The Toledo Fire Department established a 150-ft. perimeter around the scene as a precaution. The crash resulted in two fatalities and multiple injuries.
The third crash, which occurred at about 6:24 a.m. near milepost 50.8 westbound in Swanton Township (Lucas County), involved two commercial vehicles and three passenger vehicles. The crash resulted in one fatality and multiple injuries.
The crashes remain under investigation by the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
