A Toledo man accused of manufacturing crack cocaine is going to prison.

DeCarlos Benton, 43, was transported from the jail Tuesday to the courtroom of Wood County Common Pleas Judge Matt Reger.

He was indicted in October for possession of cocaine, trafficking in cocaine and possessing criminal tools, all fifth-degree felonies; and illegal manufacturing of drugs, a second-degree felony.

On Sept. 8 in the 27000 block of Oregon Road, Perrysburg, a search warrant was conducted on Benton’s Chevy Impala. Inside, officers found less than 5 grams of crack cocaine, two digital scales, sandwich bags, and a glass bowl with razor blade marks and white residue.

Glass bowls are commonly used to manufacture crack cocaine, according to the police report.

In June, he pleaded guilty to the trafficking charge as indicted and amended attempt to commit illegal manufacture of drugs, a third-degree felony.

Defense attorney Kati Tharp said her client had been in custody for more than 11 months and asked for credit for time served and a sentence of community control.

Benton has shown he has been employed for more of his adult life and has children he financially supports, she said.

“He said he will do whatever the probation office asks of him,” she said.

Reger imposed sentences of 12 months for the trafficking charge and 24 months for the manufacturing charge.

The sentences are to be served concurrently with credit for time served.
