Combating high heat at the fair

Box fans have been set up in animal barns to keep air circulating as temperatures reached the 90s this week at the Wood County Fair.

Heather Nissen, advisor for Horses R Us 4-H Club, said there is a rinse station that is 24-hour accessible to clean and prep the horses and keep them cool. Ice coolers around the arena are available for the riders to keep hydrated and water bottles are allowed in the ring while competitors wait for results.

The barns all have big ceiling fans and the riders have set up box fans for their horses.

Club member Zahara Shalabe said she keeps her horse rinsed off with access to lots of water and she pays attention to their health when the temperatures rise.

The pigs, goats and rabbits all have great ventilation for the animals along with personal fans and lots of water is made available.

Emma Nester, who was in the goat barn, said that setting up the barn this year to combat the heat was critical along with walking the goats when it was cooler. Keeping the animals from being cramped in the barn helps, said the CloverAchievers 4-H Club member.

Grace Talcee said last year was hotter. She said she keeps lots of water available along with a fan to keep her cow Oreo cool in the heat.
