Bowling Green City Schools has hired two administrators in the past two months.

At its meeting on July 23, the board hired Josiah Rupp as the new assistant principal at the high school.

He replaces Beth Utz, who resigned effective Aug. 1.

Rupp was given a two-year contract with a base salary of $82,000.

He is a graduate of Blissfield (Michigan) High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Bowling Green State University.

He did his student teaching at Bowling Green Middle School.

“So, the opportunity to come back and serve the school district in a larger capacity at the administration level is something that I’m extremely excited for,” he said.

He said he finished graduate school in the spring and soon will be certified with an alternative administrator’s license.

“For five years while I was in college, I developed really good relationships with a lot of community members and several of my closest friends, their children are starting to enter the school district now. Just the opportunity to come back and serve people in the community at large and help serve their children … was a real big inspiration for me to want to come back (to Bowling Green),” he said.

He briefly taught biology in St. Petersburg, Florida, before taking the position of physics teacher at Central Catholic High School in Toledo, where he also was assistant varsity football coach.

He does not plan to continue his coaching career with the Bobcats.

“I am fully aware that these new responsibilities are going to be a learning curve, so my sole focus is going to be on administration,” Rupp said.

The board in June hired Rachel Newell as executive director of teaching and learning, effective Aug. 1.

There was a solid pool of candidates, and it was very apparent that Newell was at the top of the list, said Superintendent Ted Haselman.

She comes with a lot of knowledge and experience in curriculum, he said.

“I think she’s going to do some really great things with our teaching and learning department, which will impact our student learning on a daily basis,” he said.

Newell previously was in charge of math curriculum at Perrysburg Schools but also supported teachers in the classrooms with strategies and principals with initiatives.

She held that position for 12-13 years.

“I think it’s a great community,” said the former Bowling Green resident.

She is a 2011 graduate of Bowling Green State University with a degree in high school math. She earned master’s degrees in educational leadership and public administration from BGSU.

“There’s a lot of growth in Perrysburg, which is great, but I also think it’s great to have a focus on the students and not have to worry about all of those other aspects,” she said.

Newell replaced Angie Schall and will be paid $103,000 annually.

The board in June also hired Hollie Parsons as EMIS specialist, effective July 1.

Parsons took over the position previously held by Esther Moosbrugger and was given a base salary of $73,000.

“We are extremely excited to bring Holly on,” Haselman said. “She’s got eight years of experience in an EMIS coordinator position in a neighboring district and this role is extremely important to ensure that our reporting to the state is accurate. …”

EMIS is a very important position, and the summer is a very busy time, Parsons said.

She explained she will be responsible for the accurate reporting to the Ohio Department of Education staff, student, demographic and financial data and is responsible for receiving the correct state and federal funding.
