The man who hid from police in a wooded area in Perrysburg Township, causing the interstate to close and area workers to shelter in place, has been indicted.

A Wood County grand jury on Wednesday indicted Darryl Tyrone Elston Jr., 37, Toledo, for receiving stolen property, a fourth-degree felony; failure to comply with an order or signal of a police officer, a third-degree felony; having weapons while under disability, a third-degree felony; tampering with evidence, a third-degree felony; and obstructing official business, a fifth-degree felony.

On July 11 at 8:59 p.m., Rossford dispatch was advised by Toledo police that they were in pursuit of a stolen vehicle on I-75 and terminated the chase at the Lucas/Wood counties line. A Rossford officer patrolling northbound on Lime City Road was passed by a vehicle matching Toledo’s description. The vehicle sped up as soon as the officer turned the cruiser around to follow and continued southbound at a high rate of speed.

The driver turned into a driveway in the 29000 block of Lime City Road and continued into the backyard. While in the yard, a police officer utilized intentional contact with the stolen Honda HR-V, causing its airbags to deploy and rendering it inoperable.

The driver then exited the vehicle and started to run. As a foot pursuit ensued, officers observed he had a handgun. The male continued to run southbound toward the I-75 overpass, climbed down the embankment and crossed both lanes of I-75 before continuing into the wooded area south of Buck Road.

A perimeter was set up around the wooded area.

A multitude of police agencies assisted, including Perrysburg City, Perrysburg Township, Northwood, Toledo and Owens Community College police departments; border patrol; the Ohio State Highway Patrol and its aviation unit; and the Wood County Sheriff’s Office and its Special Response Team.

The interstate was shut down in both directions for approximately three hours. Workers at the UPS facility were told to shelter in place until the male was taken into custody.

The male was observed via helicopter still in the wooded area south of Buck and Lime City roads. He was taken into custody at 12:18 a.m. by the Special Response Team and was identified at Elston.

It was discovered he had a warrant through Wood County for a probation violation that stemmed from a drug offence.

He is in jail with a $75,000 bond.
