Bowling Green police were dispatched Wednesday to the 100 block of West Wooster Street on a report of a possible fraud on Facebook.

The caller stated that she had been messaging someone via Facebook from her phone, according to the Bowling Green Police Division report.

When officers arrived, they spoke with the caller who stated that they had sent a total of $1,500 to an unknown person. The caller stated that the person had posed as her “nephew’s stepmother,” according to the report.

The caller stated that the Facebook account holder was selling a bunch of items that had belonged to a family member. The caller sent a message asking for a carport and a 2017 Honda Accord, according to the report.

The caller stated that they were told they needed to pay at least half of the $3,500 total or the items would be sold to someone else. After attempting to send the money to several different email accounts, one email account worked via PayPal.

The Facebook account holder told the caller to send $1,500 worth of Apple cash cards. After sending the information for the first two cash cards, the Facebook user began acting strange, according to the report.

The caller grew suspicious afterwards and did not send the third cash card to the Facebook user and later confirmed with the actual stepmother that the account was fake, according to the report.

Officers recommended that the caller contact their bank and Apple. Officers also contacted both companies and are awaiting a response from both, according to the report.
