Elmwood’s athletic field updates near the finish line

BLOOMDALE — Elmwood’s track and football field are near completion.

The school board heard an update at Monday’s meeting.

Many features have been updated, including the improvement of the facility’s overall design.

“The track is wrapping up its final stages,” said Superintendent Tony Borton.

It was milled down with new rubber and lining installed. There also are new goal posts and time clocks and the long jump and pole vault areas were fixed.

“Track-wise, we will be in really good shape for the next season,” he said.

The board approved the revised request for use of facilities form to update the costs for building rental, including custodial/food service fees.

It’s gotten to where, especially on a Sunday, if you rent the community center, we began to lose money, Borton said.

We looked across the board and it was costing the district money, he said.

“By upping the rates, we are confident that those rates are covering the rentals and making it affordable for the community to use,” he said.

The new rate is $40 per hour.

The board also approved the online instruction during periods of closure plan, with no changes.

“The plan is in place so that we can do the three calamity days. The state changed these rules in the law update about a year-and-a-half ago. It’s a little bit more cumbersome, so we must do this plan to state that we’re going to do it,” Borton said. “If we need those days, they are ready. Our teachers are prepared from day one because we sometimes do online instruction.”

All offices in the district are scheduled to reopen to the public on July 29.

The next board meeting is scheduled for Aug. 12 at 5:30 p.m. in the Elmwood Schools auditeria.
