A man who discharged a firearm in a Bowling Green apartment is going to prison.

Tyrice Stackhouse, 30, was transported from jail Thursday to the courtroom of Wood County Common Pleas Judge Joel Kuhlman.

He was indicted in July 2023 for improperly discharging a firearm at or into a habitation or a school safety zone, a second-degree felony; and having weapons while under disability, a third-degree felony.

In May, he pleaded guilty to amended attempted discharging a firearm, a third-degree felony; and having weapons while under disability as indicted.

Kuhlman said while prison was not presumed, each charge carried a possible nine-36 months sentence.

Sometime between July 10, 2023, and July 17, 2023, Stackhouse discharged a firearm into an occupied structure and was in possession of a firearm after being convicted of felony drug possession in Ashtabula County in 2013.

Defense attorney Kent Sobran said his client took responsibility for his actions.

“It was an unintentional act,” he said.

Stackhouse dropped the gun and it discharged, Sobran said.

His client has asked to be sentenced to the SEARCH program.

“He wants to change, to stay out of the justice system,” Sobran said.

SEARCH, offered at the NorthWest Community Corrections Center in Bowling Green, offers an intensive, evidence-based treatment program designed to assist residents with making positive behavioral changes.

Stackhouse apologized for having a gun.

“I learned my lesson. I want to do better,” he said.

Kuhlman pointed out the defendant had been sentenced to SEARCH in the past, but completed it unsuccessfully.

Stackhouse said he could complete the program in any city other than Cleveland, where he was previously sentenced.

He was on parole at the time of this offense and has spent approximately 147 days in jail.

“(You) could have seriously hurt yourself or someone in the next apartment,” Kuhlman said. “It was easily preventable if you followed the terms of your parole.”

He imposed one-year sentences for each charge, to be served concurrently.

Stackhouse will be given credit for time served.

As part of his sentence, he has to forfeit the Taurus C2c 9mm firearm and ammunition.
