Elmwood acts on personnel

BLOOMDALE — Elmwood Local Schools’ Board of Education addressed several personnel issues at its June meeting.

Superintendent Tony Borton honored the district’s retirees: Bruce King, Beth Rutter and Robin Reynolds.

“We have two bus drivers that are retiring this year. As a district, we are going to miss them because we don’t find drivers now. We had two other bus drivers retire earlier in the year, so we are down four drivers right now,” Borton said. “Robin has been teaching for longer than I’ve been here. She’s one of those people who comes in and does their job. She cares for the kids and those around her. We wish everyone leaving the best of luck.”

The board accepted resignations from Jace Grossman, strength coach, effective May 31; Sandy Laborie, middle school media aide and quiz bowl coach, effective July 1; Samantha Hoover, first grade, effective Aug. 15; and Garrett Michalkiewicz, sixth grade social studies, effective Aug. 15.

The board hired Christopher Nelson as the new sixth grade social studies teacher.

“Chris is an Elmwood High School graduate. We’re excited,” Borton said. “We get a person who has been teaching the same exact thing that we’ve been looking for. He knows the curriculum and everything we expect.”

Also at the meeting, the board:

• Congratulated the high school softball team, which won the BVC championship; the high school boys track team for finishing sixth in the BVC; and the high school girls track team for finishing fourth place at the BVC.

• Congratulated Micah Oliver (high jump) and Jakob Zibbel (1 mile) who competed in the OHSAA state track meet.

• Updated the job title and additional responsibilities of Gregg Abke, from buildings and grounds supervisor to director of operations and safety.

• Entered a contract with Bowling Green State University for strength coach services for the 2024-2025 school year at a cost of $16,000 or less.

• Approved a trip to Washington, D.C., for the high school AP social studies classes.

• Accepted a $35.30 donation for the student lunch program from Wayne United Methodist Church; and $5,000 to Elmwood boys basketball from NWO basketball program.

• Agreed to pay Forward Edge $63,768.16 for the district data server and licensing.

The next regular board meeting is scheduled for July 8 at 5:30 p.m. in the Elmwood Schools auditeria.
