Details released for fatal Perrysburg Twp. shooting

A man shot and killed last week had fired on officers and perhaps a passing vehicle.

Perrysburg Township police were dispatched for a 911 call to the 26700 block of Tracy Road on May 23.

The deceased has been identified as Beau Daniel Purtee, 23, Toledo.

“All of us here at Perrysburg Township take great pride in keeping our community safe. …” said police Chief Matt Gazarek.

Gazarek played the 911 call at a press conference Wednesday. Purtee could be heard saying “I don’t want to hurt anybody” and “I don’t know who’s trying to kill me.”

The 10:51 p.m. call lasted seven minutes as the Perrysburg Township dispatcher repeatedly asked the man, who went from yelling to ranting, for his name, who was with him and who was trying to kill him.

His voice of the 911 call got fainter and a gunshot could be heard. Gazarek said officers found his phone near the house.

Officers responded to the area and were fired upon by Purtee, who was in the ditch.

Three bullets from Purtee’s Glock 9 mm were retrieved from a tree that an officer was taking cover behind, Gazarek said.

The other three officers stayed behind the corner of a home, according to a diagram shown by Gazarek.

Gazarek played the body cameras with audio of three responding officers, which showed them being fired at five times upon arriving at the scene. Body camera images were not shown by the officer who joined the department in March.

“It was a tense situation. The officers remained calm and checked on each other throughout this entire situation,” Gazarek said.

Purtee’s Glock had a gun light and a red dot sight, he said, which is what officers used to pinpoint his location.

There were repeated requests for adjacent agencies to stop traffic on Tracy Road from Ohio 795 to Latcha Road. Several vehicles were seen driving by the scene and a gunshot coincided with a vehicle driving by.

“He’s shooting from the ditch right now” was heard from one officer.

At one point, officers saw a light in the ditch but no movement and moved around the house to make sure Purtee wasn’t coming up behind them. They indicated they had no idea where he was.

“An extremely dangerous situation,” Gazarek said. “He was still firing rounds at officers and presumably at passing cars.”

The officer that fired the fatal shot used his service weapon and has been with the police department since December 2016.

He was the only officer who fired his weapon, Gazarek said.

Purtee was found in the ditch, lying on his side, with a gun in his hand.

“They acted in accordance with what they’re trained to do. It’s an unfortunate outcome,” Gazarek said. “It’s not something any officer wants to be faced with. It’s traumatic not only for the officers involved but for the whole department.”

The four officers are off duty to clear their heads, Gazarek said.

He said they had learned, through the investigation, that Purtee had attended a funeral earlier in the day and had been drinking.

It’ll take six weeks to get the toxicology report, he said. The Lucas County Coroner is conducting the autopsy.

Perrysburg, Rossford and Lake Township police assisted at the scene.

The Bureau of Criminal Investigation is overseeing the investigation.
