Eastwood’s Oliver top athlete after steady performance

ROSSFORD — There are no bones about it — Oak Harbor made it clear in their first season in the Northern Buckeye Conference that they were here to win championships.

After Eastwood won 10 of 11 NBC titles in boys track, Oak Harbor scored 181½ points to easily outdistance the Eagles (119½) at the Rossford Athletic Center on Saturday.

Lake (94) was third, followed by Maumee (76), Otsego (68), Genoa (47), Fostoria (46), and Rossford (27).

Oak Harbor was led by Running Athletes of the Meet Tyler Thompson and Wyatt Augsberger and Maumee’s Lucas Polkinghorn was the Field Athlete of the Meet.

One consolation for the Eagles was that junior Dayquan Oliver was named NBC Boys Athlete of the Year despite not winning a single event Saturday.

At the NBC meet, Oliver finished second in the 400-meter run (51.46), third in the long jump (21 feet, 3¾ inches), fourth in the 100-meter dash (11.41), and fourth in the 200 (23.26).

Eastwood did get a field event championship from sophomore pole vaulter Cullen Shank, who cleared 14 feet and was still going for a personal record after every other event at the league meet was finished.

In his pursuit of 14-7, fighting a strong wind behind him that was also rattling the pole supports, fans still hanging around at the NBC meet gathered, clapping and encouraging Shank to clear the mark.

That height would have meant a chance at the Nike nationals, but it wasn’t to be as all three attempts failed.

Shank has had solid mentorship from his coaches and former Eastwood pole vaulters, so expect those numbers to go higher as he enters his junior or season years, or maybe even at this year’s district or regional meet.

“I’ve been working at it, had a lot of great mentors from the past — (former Eastwood head coach) Gary Sabo and (graduated pole vaulter) Dalton Hesselbart, who was a big idol for me last year, and my coaches — I live up to them every day.”

The league championship gave Shank some encouragement. Finishing second was junior teammate Hayden Hoelter, who was two feet back at 12 feet.

“I felt like I’ve had pretty good technique, was patient with it, and I finally put everything together,” Shank said.
